Walk the cell blocks of the prison that held James Earl Ray. No reservation needed; the site also has a restaurant and distillery.
Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary sits in a narrow valley below Frozen Head and ran for more than a century before closing in 2009. It's now open for self-guided and guided tours, with a restaurant and a moonshine distillery on site.
No reservations are needed for regular tours. Buy tickets at the gift shop when you arrive. Paranormal investigations are booked separately and run year-round.
Fall hours: Thursday to Sunday through October, then weekends only through November 29. The site closes for the season December through March.
